In this post, I will share a comprehensive review of the e-mail marketing tool, Moosend, so you can discover if it is the best platform for your next campaign.

I have been using Moosend for my e-mail marketing campaigns, and in this Moosend review, I will dive deep into it.

What Is E-mail Marketing?

Before I talk about Moosend, I would like to discuss e-mail marketing and its importance for your business. According to research, e-mail marketing gives a return on investment of about 38x. We are talking about investing $1 and drawing $39.

So, if you are not using e-mail marketing, you are missing a great opportunity!

Although many marketers believe that social media is the most effective way to reach their audience due to the increase in the number of users on several platforms, e-mail marketing is still, by far, the best platform!

And, I am not saying this for the sake of saying. What we do not know about our gold old e-mail is:

  1. 4 billion users use e-mail worldwide and there are 7 billion e-mail accounts.
  2. 3 million e-mails are sent every second!
  3. Data breaches and privacy concerns have forced people to exit some social media channels. Hence, when it comes to connecting with customers, there is no channel with a wider reach than e-mail.
  4. There are three times more e-mail accounts than Facebook and Twitter combined!
  5. People see e-mails! You know, 90% of the e-mails are delivered to your inboxes, whereas only 2% of your friends or followers see your posts in their News Feed. This means that your message is 45 times more likely to be seen using e-mail. Moreover, to register on Facebook and Instagram, you’d need to enter your E-mail, isn’t it?

I am sure the facts I shared have convinced you to consider e-mail marketing for your business.

What Is Moosend?

Moosend is an E-mail Service Provider or ESP. In simple words, Moosend is an e-mail marketing platform that lets you send e-mails to your audience, schedule campaigns to promote your products and services, trigger automation to scale your revenue, and so on.

Moosend was founded in 2011 by Yannis Psarras and Panos Melissaropoulos. From Moosend, you can also send personalized e-mails to your audience. For example, if someone has shown interest in product A, you can send them e-mails regarding product A only, alright?

Now, before I move to the next segment of this post, I want to share a small story with you.

It was the year 2019. I had started my Affiliate Marketing business in 2018, but I was reluctant to invest effort into e-mail marketing. Then, I purchased a course on Affiliate Marketing in which the coach conveyed the significance of e-mail marketing for setting up a flourishing business.

While going through the course, it struck me that I was missing out on a big opportunity. I am a middle-class Indian citizen, so I started my hunt for the best “free” e-mail marketing tool.

I found and used a couple of free tools until 2021. Then, when I took up Affiliate Marketing full-time in late 2021, I thought of investing a bit in e-mail marketing and came across Moosend.

I chose Moosend for 2 reasons:

  • It was cheaper than other e-mail marketing platforms, and,
  • I was easy to use.

Features of Moosend

So after using Moosend for about 12 months, I will share the features that you will find appealing.

(1) Campaigns

The first feature of Moosend is campaigns. You can send campaigns to a specific segment of your subscribers based on their interests and behavior, OK?

When you send campaigns based on your subscribers’ interests and behavior, you save yourself the vanity of sending e-mails to subscribers who are uninterested in a piece of content, alright?

(2) Growth Tools

The second feature is growth tools. Under the growth tools, you will be able to create custom responsive landing pages and lead forms to capture the e-mails of people. The greatest aspect, according to me, is that the landing pages and forms are configured for various devices, such as desktop and mobile phones.

You can create your forms in various ways such as a pop-up form, inline form, sticky banner, full-page form, and so on.

Additionally, you can embed forms on your website by adding HTML or JavaScript code, or you can use a WordPress plugin.

(3) Audience

The third feature is, ‘Audience.’ You can create an e-mail list and segment people based on their behavior and interests, OK?

Segmenting your subscribers into different categories allows you to send them e-mails that are better tailored to their needs and interests, alright?

(4) Reports

The fourth feature of Moosend is ‘Reports.’ Reports give you insightful data about the performance of your campaigns, your e-mail open rates, link clicks, and conversions.

And, the fifth feature is, ‘Automation.’ You can set up automated e-mails based on a trigger. For example, if you have a form A, you can trigger an automation every time the form is submitted, OK?

You can also create rule-based paths using if-then logic so that when a subscriber takes a particular action, you can send them pre-defined e-mails or add them to a segment, alright?

Pricing Structure of Moosend: How Much Do You Need To Pay?

Now, let me share the pricing structure of Moosend.

Moosend has a 3-tier pricing structure.

(1) Free Plan

The first tier is a free trial of 30 days. In the free trial, you would not need to enter your credit card details to access the platform, OK? In the free trial, you can send unlimited e-mails.

You will also be able to create an automation workflow and Moosend will allow you to create one landing page and one form. However, you will not have access to the SMTP server, OK?

(2) Pro Plan

The second plan is the Pro plan. You can either pay for the Pro plan monthly or annually. If you pay monthly, you will need to pay $9 for 500 subscribers.

On the other hand, you can pay an annual amount of $7 per month. If you increase the number of subscribers, you will need to pay more, OK? You can also get the free trial Pro plan for 30 days, OK?

In the pro plan, you will be able to send unlimited e-mails to your subscribers. Then, you can create automation workflows, landing pages, lead capture forms, and you will have access to the SMTP server.

However, you will not get an account manager.

Based on the number of subscribers, the price in the pro plan will vary, as follows:

  • $9 for 0 to 500 subscribers
  • $16 for 501 to 1,000 subscribers
  • $24 for 1,001 to 2,000 subscribers
  • $32 for 2,001 to 3,000 subscribers
  • $48 for 3,001 to 5,000 subscribers
  • $64 for 5,001 to 8,000 subscribers
  • $88 for 8,001 to 10,000 subscribers
  • $88 for 8,001 to 10,000 subscribers
  • $160 for 10,001 to 25,000 subscribers
  • $315 for 25,001 to 50,000 subscribers
  • $416 for 50,001 to 75,000 subscribers

(3) Enterprise Plan

Then, in the ‘Enterprise’ plan, you will get all the features that are included in the pro plan. Additionally, you will get an account manager, priority support, SSO & SAML, and a dedicated IP for your desktop or laptop.

Benefits of Moosend

Now, I will share the benefits of Moosend.

(1) Campaigns Make Your Marketing Easier

Moosend campaigns will help your business to schedule e-mails and, if you are an organization that gives seasonal or festival offers, you can set up the e-mails beforehand and schedule them for the festivals.

(2) Interactive Pages & Lead Forms

The second advantage of Moosend is that you can create interactive pages and lead forms to capture users’ attention and e-mails to promote your products and services, OK?

(3) Easy To Use

The third advantage is that Moosend is very easy to use. Everything is quite self-explanatory and once you are comfortable with the platform, you can work your magic!

(4) Moosend Is Cheaper Than Its Competitors

The fourth, and the most important one if you are from the middle-class is that it is cheaper than its competitors.

Moosend’s pro plan starts at $9 per month as compared to ConvertKit’s $15 per month ‘Creator’ plan.

So, if you are on a shoestring budget, you can start using Moosend. Being from the middle-class myself,

I preferred a cheap tool that – just about – does the work.

(5) Moosend’s Support Is Super Helpful!

The fifth advantage is that their support is super helpful! No matter how late it is, if you have a query, their live chat support is always active to guide you and solve your doubts.

If you cannot understand what went wrong, their support team will access your account and rectify the problem! Kudos, Moosend!

Drawbacks of Moosend

Now, let me share the drawbacks of Moosend.

(1) Moosend Lags – A Lot!

The first disadvantage is that it lags – a lot! There have been times when I had to refresh my page twice or thrice while creating automation.

So, if you want to get your patience tested, Moosend is your go-to platform.

(2) Content Resets!

The second disadvantage, I have faced this a hundred times, is that while creating an e-mail campaign if you click preview, the content is reset!

For example, suppose you write a wonderful e-mail explaining the benefits of your product and click preview to check out how it will look on desktops, tablets, and mobile phones. One out of five times, you will see the default content.

(3) Page Does Not Auto Scroll!

The third disadvantage is that the page does not scroll if you try dragging and dropping a specific e-mail automation step to the bottom of the page.

I face this all the time, I have reached out to their support for help, but they did not fix the bug, yet! You can watch the below video to see what I mean by the ‘no-scroll’ problem. 

(4) Lead Form Templates Can Be Improved

The fourth disadvantage is that their lead form templates can be improved. By default, their lead forms capture only the e-mails of people.

Where is the problem here? Suppose you capture only the e-mails of your leads. How will you address them? “Hi,” Suppose receiving an e-mail that greets you with your e-mail instead of your name. How will you feel?

If you are an established business, I am sure you’ll agree with me, that it does not sound professional, isn’t it? “Hi, James!” sounds better than “Hi,!” isn’t it? So when you create lead forms, you will be required to add a ‘first name’ field or a ‘full name’ field.

(5) Takes Time To Learn Things

The fifth drawback of Moosend is that it will take time to get used to the UI. The interface can be a little bit confusing and overwhelming, especially if you are a beginner.

Taking full advantage of Moosend’s automation, segmentation, and tagging requires time. However, you can greatly reduce the learning curve by referring to their knowledge resources and video guides.

(6) Custom Fonts Disappear!

The sixth drawback is that custom fonts – by the way, you can custom fonts in Moosend, which is not possible in any of its competitors – disappear out of nowhere!

For example, my brand font is ‘Varela Round.’ I added it to be used in e-mails and lead forms, but sometimes, the font disappears – just like that!

What do you do then? What to do if you cannot see your font in their list? Yes! You are supposed to refresh the page a couple of times.

(7) You Are Locked Out Once The Free Trial Is Over!!!

The seventh drawback is that once the free trial is over, you will be locked out of the tool until you pay for the pro plan. Yes, yes, yes, it has happened to me! So to get my account and data back, I was literally ‘forced’ to pay.

(8) Subscriber Import Operation Usually Fails

The eighth problem I faced while using Moosend is when you import users into an e-mail list, the operation will end unsuccessfully if the number of users is greater than 100.

I found a workaround, however. I split the list into 2 excel sheets with 50 subscribers each and then imported them into Moosend. And… voila!

Most Common Problems Faced By Moosend Users & Their Feedback

Now, I will address the problems and bugs people have faced and what they have to say about Moosend.

Moosend Bug 1

Problem: The question mark in the lead form rendered it useless.

My Opinion: The question mark in the lead form worked for me. I have collected a few leads from that form. You can view that form in this blog post.

Problem: No HTML form available and WordPress plugins do not work as expected.

My Opinion: Yes, there is no HTML form available. You can only customize the templates they offer. Secondly, the WordPress plugin really does not work as you expect. I tried creating a lead form on WordPress, but I was stunned by the final form. It looked like a Windows 98 form, to be honest!

Moosend Bug 3

Problem: Support team helped to set up marketing and automation.

My Opinion: As I shared earlier, their support team will hold your hands and guide you if you are stuck. I will give their support team 9 out of 10.

Moosend Bug 4

Problem: Moosend overdelivers for its price.

My Opinion: Yes, it does! Many e-mail marketing platforms charge more for the features that Moosend provides just for $9! ConvertKit, for example, charges $15 for creating automation. Yes, for middle-class citizens like me, paying $9 every month and getting all the features is much more affordable and convenient than paying $15. For a middle-class citizen like me, I can buy 3 t-shirts for $6 from fashion street, Mumbai! LOL! 😀

Moosend Review: What Do I Think?

I have been using Moosend for 12 months for creating forms and campaigns and I will recommend it to both, content creators and businesses.
